Best home Wi‑Fi setup for a two-story house
Buffering upstairs, dropped video calls, and dead zones almost always come down to one thing: a single router trying to cover a house it can't reach. Here's how to fix it right.
Why one router isn't enough
Wi‑Fi signal weakens through walls, floors, appliances, and even large mirrors. In most two-story homes, a single router in the basement or a corner just can't reach the far bedrooms — no matter how expensive it is.
The fix: a mesh Wi‑Fi system
A mesh system uses two or three small nodes placed around the house that work together as one network. Your phone hands off between them automatically as you move around.
- Eero (simple, reliable, subscription-optional)
- Google Nest Wifi (great app, works with Google Home)
- Netgear Orbi (top performance for larger homes)
- TP‑Link Deco (excellent value)
Where to put the nodes
The main node connects to your modem. Additional nodes go roughly one per floor, out in the open — not in a closet or behind the TV. We map coverage during setup so every room has real signal, not just bars.
One more thing: split your smart-home devices
Smart bulbs, plugs, and cameras don't need to share the same Wi‑Fi network as your laptops. A separate IoT network keeps things faster and more secure.
